The Protection of Critical Infrastructure Act (Bill 57)

Jul 12, 2021 | Legislation Tracker

MOFA supports the right to free expression outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, including the right to protest. MOFA is deeply concerned that Bill 57 may criminalize protest activity by creating a provincial offence and further penalizing mechanisms for anyone obstructing “critical infrastructure.” According to the Manitoba Energy Justice Coalition, Bill 57 “could open the door for people to be thrown in prison for simply protesting on the sidewalk,” and is likely to have a “disproportionate” impact on Indigenous protestors.

The Official Opposition has held Bill 57 over until the fall sitting of the legislature.
